  25. To view Readme.txt on screen in Notepad, maximize the Notepad 
  26. window.

  41. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  42. ===================

  44. To run Internet Explorer 5, your computer must meet the 
  45. following minimum requirements:
  46.  
  47. - A 486 with a 25 MHz processor
  48.  
  49. - For Microsoft Windows 3.1x:
  50.   12 MB of RAM minimum
  51.  
  52. - For Microsoft Windows NT 3.51:
  53.   16 MB of RAM minimum
  54.  
  55. - 30 MB of hard-disk space to run Setup for a minimum install 
  56.   (minimum install will use about 16 MB of space)
  57.  
  58. - Mouse
  59.  
  60. - Modem or network interface card
  61.

  64. SETUP
  65. =====
  66.  
  67. Whether you choose to install over the network or to download 
  68. the installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are 
  69. copied to your hard disk. This is so that you can reinstall 
  70. more quickly if you need to. 
  71.  
  72. You cannot install this version of Internet Explorer 5 to or
  73. run it from a network drive. However, you can download it to
  74. a network drive. To do this, you must map the network drive
  75. to a drive letter on your computer.

  78. UNINSTALLING INTERNET EXPLORER 5 AND OTHER INTERNET TOOLS
  79. =========================================================
  80.  
  81. If you want to reinstall an earlier version of Internet 
  82. Explorer, you must first uninstall version 5. If you install 
  83. an earlier version without uninstalling version 5, the earlier 
  84. version of Internet Explorer may not run properly.
  85.  
  86. Automatic uninstall is supported in this version, although some 
  87. files will be left in the Windows\System directory and may be 
  88. used by other applications, including Internet Explorer version 
  89. 3.x. These files include the following:

  93.     Rb32.dll
  94.     Comctlie.dll 
  95.     Secur16.dll
  96.     Security.dll

  108. If, after installing Internet Explorer 5, you want to install 
  109. Internet Explorer version 4.x, you must first uninstall Internet 
  110. Explorer 5 using the included Uninstall program, and then 
  111. manually delete the Win16x.dll file from the Windows\System 
  112. folder. If you do not do this, you may see a general protection 
  113. fault when you install Internet Explorer 4.x. Because Win16x.dll 
  114. is a system file, you should not delete it unless it is going 
  115. to be replaced. (Installing Internet Explorer 4.x replaces this 
  116. file.)

  118. If you have created a dialer connection before running 
  119. Uninstall, the Setup program will not delete those files from 
  120. the directory where you installed this version of Internet 
  121. Explorer. Also, the Dialer icon in the Internet Explorer 
  122. program group will not be removed.

  125. KNOWN ISSUES
  126. ============

  128. Running Internet Explorer 5 on Windows 3.1
  129. ------------------------------------------
  130. If you are using Windows version 3.1 (not version 3.11 or 
  131. Windows for Workgroups), you must also be running the MS-DOS 
  132. Share.exe program. To do this, carry out the following steps:
  133.  
  134. 1. Open your Autoexec.bat file (usually found in the C:\ folder).
  135. 2. Add the following line to the end of the file, but before any 
  136.    lines that read "win" or "win.com":
  137.  
  138.         share.exe
  139.  
  140.  
  141. Internet Connection Wizard Doesn't Start
  142. ----------------------------------------
  143. If Internet Explorer 5 is installed with the stack and Dialer 
  144. but is set up using a LAN connection, switching from a LAN 
  145. connection to the Dialer and then starting Internet Explorer 
  146. does not start the Internet Connection wizard.

  149. Issues for ISDN Users
  150. ---------------------
  151. The Internet Connection wizard in this version of Internet 
  152. Explorer does not detect ISDN. If you use an ISDN modem, you 
  153. must manually select the make and model when setting up 
  154. Internet Explorer.
  155.  
  156. You also need to create connection icons. When you do this, 
  157. you must include the following information: username, password, 
  158. DNS (Domain Name System) server, and whether your ISP provides 
  159. a static or dynamic IP address.
  160.  
  161. You must also select the correct connect speed for each 
  162. connection. To do this, in the Properties dialog box for the 
  163. connection, click the Modem tab. The recommended speed for 
  164. dual-channel capability is 115,200 bps. 
  165.  
  166. This version of Internet Explorer does not support automatic 
  167. account creation (via the Internet Connection wizard) for 
  168. ISDN users.

  171. Downloading Files via FTP
  172. -------------------------
  173. If you download a file by using FTP over a modem, the file will 
  174. be downloaded before you see the dialog box asking you where to 
  175. save the file. If the file is a large one, it may appear that 
  176. nothing is happening while the file is downloading.

  179. SSL Connection Problems: Changing Ports in Outlook Express
  180. ----------------------------------------------------------
  181. When viewing newsgroups in Outlook Express, if you need to 
  182. change the port number in order to make an SSL connection (for 
  183. example, if you did not originally specify that the server you 
  184. want requires an SSL connection), you must either click another 
  185. folder after changing the port number or restart Outlook Express. 
  186. Only then will you be able to download the newsgroups on the SSL 
  187. server.

  190. Importing an Address Book from Internet Mail to Outlook Express
  191. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  192. Outlook Express may not automatically import your existing 
  193. Address Book from Microsoft Internet Mail. To import the Address 
  194. Book manually, carry out the following steps:
  195.  
  196. 1. Open the Address Book.
  197. 2. Click the File menu.
  198. 3. Click Import Address Book.
  199. 4. Choose to import the  Microsoft Internet Mail for Windows 3.1 
  200.    Address Book. 
  201.  
  202.    The file should be located in the directory 
  203.    Iexplore\Mail\User1 (or User2, 3, etc., if 
  204.    you have multiple user accounts set up).

  207. Tasks Not Appearing in the Task List
  208. ------------------------------------
  209. If you click the Send And Receive toolbar button or Send And 
  210. Receive on the Tools menu when you are connected to an IMAP 
  211. (rev1) account, and no tasks appear in the task list, carry 
  212. out the following steps:
  213.  
  214. 1. Open the Properties dialog box for the account.
  215. 2. Select Check For New Messages In Subscribed Folders. 
  216.  
  217.  
  218. Issues with SSL and PCT
  219. -----------------------
  220. If you use the Advanced dialog box (on the Tools menu, click 
  221. Internet Options, and then click Advanced) to enable or disable 
  222. SSL versions 2.0 or 3.0 or PCT, you must restart Internet 
  223. Explorer for your changes to take effect.

  226. Installing on Computers with Large Amounts of Memory
  227. ----------------------------------------------------
  228. When you install on a computer that has 40 MB or more of 
  229. memory, you may receive an error message during setup 
  230. indicating that your computer does not have enough memory 
  231. to install Internet Explorer. If this happens, locate the 
  232. Setup.exe file (in the IE5setup folder) and run it with the 
  233. command line switch "/f:16". You can do this by using the 
  234. Run command from either File Manager or Program Manager.

  236. Internet Explorer 3.x Dialer May Not Work After Uninstall
  237. ---------------------------------------------------------
  238. If you are running Internet Explorer 3.x with Phone Dialer,
  239. and then you install Internet Explorer 5 in a different
  240. directory , the version 3.x Phone Dialer will not work
  241. properly if you uninstall Internet Explorer 5. To work
  242. around this problem, you must specify the version 3.x Phone
  243. Dialer settings again.

  245. You Cannot Run Two Versions of Microsoft E-Mail
  246. -----------------------------------------------
  247. If you are running Internet Explorer 3.x with Internet Mail
  248. and News installed, and then you install Internet Explorer 5
  249. and Other Internet Tools, you will no longer be able to use
  250. Internet Explorer 3.x Internet Mail and News. This is true
  251. even if you do not install Outlook Express with Internet
  252. Explorer 5 and Other Internet Tools. However, if you choose
  253. to  install Outlook Express, you can import your e-mail messages
  254. and Address Book information from Internet Mail and News.
  255.  
  256. Using Unattended Synchronization
  257. --------------------------------
  258. If you are using Internet Explorer 5 with a third-party dialer,
  259. be sure to specify a timeout limit for the dialer so that it
  260. doesn't stay connected indefinitely.

  262. Running embedded components on Windows NT 3.51
  263. -----------------------------------------------
  264. We experienced some problems running plug-ins when the Operating
  265. System is Windows NT 3.51.  This is due to the fact that the
  266. plug-in manufacturer thought that since the user is installing a
  267. 16-bit plug-in they must be installing it on a 16-bit Operating
  268. System. Some plugins will prevent an install on Windows NT 3.51
  269. however most do not.
